Printing Terminology Glossary
- Bleed
- The extension of a design beyond the trim edge, typically 3mm, to prevent white edges after cutting.
- Gripper Edge
- The margin along one edge of a press sheet held by mechanical grippers; cannot be printed on. Typically 10–15mm on offset presses.
- Imposition
- The arrangement of pages or design items on a press sheet so that after printing and cutting, they are in the correct position and order.
- Gang Printing
- Combining multiple different print jobs on the same press sheet to maximise sheet utilisation and reduce per-unit cost.
- Step-and-Repeat
- An imposition method where the same design is repeated across a sheet in a grid pattern.
- Safe Zone
- The area inside the trim line (typically 3–5mm) within which all important content should be kept.
- Trim Line
- The intended cut line for the finished piece.
- Registration
- The alignment of colours or printing elements across multiple print passes.
- Makeready
- The setup process at the beginning of a print run, including calibration and test prints.
- SRA3
- A standard press sheet size of 320 × 450mm, designed for producing finished A3 or A4 documents with bleed.
- SRA4
- A standard press sheet size of 225 × 320mm, designed for A4 and A5 production.
- Signature
- A group of pages printed on a single sheet that, when folded and cut, form a section of a book or booklet.
- Work-and-Turn
- An imposition scheme using the same gripper edge for both sides of the sheet.
- Work-and-Tumble
- Similar to work-and-turn, but the sheet is flipped end-to-end, changing the gripper edge.
- Sheet Efficiency
- The percentage of press sheet area occupied by printed items versus wasted area.
- Gutter
- The space between adjacent items on an imposition layout, allowing for cutting tolerance.
